Sovereign

The Sovereigns are all of the various spiritual beings of great power that inhabit Phenomena. All of the Sovereigns, directly or indirectly, have their origins in the Nexus. Collectively, they control the power of the elements of nature. Their forms and abilities are various, and their is a clear hierarchy of power within each element's "chain" of Sovereigns. Sometimes in very rare circumstances a Sovereign will take on a human form, or cohabitate in the same body as a human soul. Either of these two arrangements is known as an "avatar."

[edit] The Nature of the Sovereigns

Succinctly, Sovereigns are spiritual beings with powers surpassing what would generally be expected for an average human. The concept of a Sovereign is similar to that of a god, but Sovereigns themselves are not deities per se. Like deities, Sovereigns are immortal due to their spiritual nature and have great power. However, despite the superficial similarities, there are marked differences between the two types of entities.

A major difference between Sovereigns and the deities of earthly mythologies is that Sovereigns didn't exist "from eternity," but rather emerged from the Nexus. Sovereigns also lack the power to create "ex nihilo." Their most common act of "creation" is the manipulation of already existing substances, such as an Affiliated Yazata constructing itself a body after being channeled. The closest they can come to "creation ex nihilo" is to extend their own being into some separate-but-linked-to-the-self entity. This is the reason that the various "Chains" of Sovereigns form hierarchies.

[edit] Origin of the Sovereigns

As stated earlier, Sovereigns have their origins in the Nexus. Those which emerged directly from the Nexus are called Thrones. The Thrones then created underlings by a process of self-extension called Emanation. Sovereigns created by the process posess their own individual consciousness, yet remain a "part" of their "parent" Sovereign. Emanated Sovereigns are substantially weaker than their parent. Emanated sovereigns can themselves Emanate, and produce still weaker extensions of themselves (and indirectly of the original Throne sovereign).

[edit] Hierarchy

Through the process of emanation, a clear hierarchy develops. Below is an example of a Sovereignal Chain, the Aetherial Chain:

  • Throne = Sanctus
  • Dominion = The Seven Archons
  • Power = The inumerable Yazata
  • Virtue = The inumerable Anima

Each chain begins with a Throne, which emanates seven Dominions. The Dominions emanate vast quantities of Powers. The Powers emanate Virtues. Powers are the last conscious independant beings, their emanations, the Virtues are the physical embodiments of qualities exhibited by their emanating power.

[edit] Sovereignal "Chains"

A Sovereignal Chain is composed of all of the Sovereigns with a single Emanatory source. For instance, the Aetherial Chain is composed of all the Yazata, Archons and Sanctus. Each chain can be thought of as representing an "element" of nature.

[edit] The Chains

Choronas, Sanctus, Upelo, Phykost, Roccian, Vainhid, Brentig, Evindur

[edit] Anima

Animus, (plural anima) is another name for Virtue. Anima are the physical embodiments of the properties posessed by the element in the Sovereignal Chain from whence they were emanated. The universe itself can be thought to be composed of the anima of the various elements. The human soul is composed of thousands of anima, mostly Aetherial and Umbral.

[edit] Affiliation

Humans whose soul posesses enough of a Power's emanated virtues can channel that Power, into the physical realm. The Power will construct a physical body for itself. This relationship is called Affiliation. Only people of Salemite or Belian (or in one spectacular instance, both) descent have enough anima to be able to channel an affiliate. Generally a human will have only one affiliate. If the human partner dies, the Affiliated Power will slowly lose energy, eventually wrapping itself in a protective coccoon like structure. In the presence of enough anima, the Power can be awakened again.

[edit] Avatars

The avatars are confusing as hell then again, the very nature of the archons and daevas themselves were confusing. Wasn’t until yesterday that I realized they were living magic, which explains how they are able to be summoned and controlled etc. Troublingly enough for them they don’t have free will in the same sense that humans do. Which will perhaps make the avatar situation al the more interesting. Perhaps one third of the archons’ avatars will go evil. Bible reference, go! Who would that be? Well, 2 (1/3) is (1/3) of 7. So… I’d say that Uriel, Jophiel and Zadkiel go bad. Uriel as Conroy and only temporarily, Zadkiel as Amethyst, also temporarily. Jophiel? Who knows his/her/its fate.
